At this time SSART are looking to build up a support team to help us with various rolls. These include both operational support for team members and support with fundraising.
Operational Support – This is the welfare side of life for the team, your roll would be to help out in the base camp on searches. It might be something as simple as putting a brew on for teams returning from a search, or helping the search controller with duties within the camp.
Fundraising – Could you spare a few hours to help raise funds for the team? SSART have collections and events running all year round, so help is always needed
If you would like to know more about the team or discuss membership we urge you to contact our membership secretary, Richard Archer who can give you a much greater understanding of what we do and how everyone can help.

The team can be called out to a wide range of incidents 24 hours a day 7 days a week. These can be serious and sometimes life-threatening. Though call outs may be challenging and intimidate you at first, you will develop the skills and expertise to deal with things effectively, and come away with a good feeling of a difficult job well done.
The relief expressed by the people we help can be almost tangible and the satisfaction of having helped someone, not because it is your job, but simply because you choose to do so, is very uplifting.
Training is mainly in-house, thorough but enjoyable. It aims to build team spirit as well as expertise. There is always laughter and banter between members alongside the serious business of learning and practising lifesaving skills and techniques. After training we often socialise in a nearby pub where we can put the world to rights. Other social events or weekends away may also be arranged.
We are a team of men and women with varied backgrounds who share a love of the hills and the outdoors. There are no supermen and the activities of the team are well within the capabilities of the keen, fit walker. The strength of the team lies in the way that we work together in a spirit of friendship and mutual support.
As unpaid volunteers you must be prepared to provide your own equipment and pay your own travelling costs.
“Sometimes you will realise the team really has saved a life –
and you were a part of that.”
Membership for Lowland Search & Rescue is open to any person aged 18+ with good fitness (able to comfortably walk 5 miles over mixed terrain within 2 hours) able to participate in weekly training & with your own transport.
However there are many other ways that you could assist the team so if lowland search or 4x4 driving is not your thing, how about assisting with fund raising, publicity, website updates, assisting search controllers, or maintaining essential equipment?
Please get in touch, we look forward to hearing from you.
